Panagia at Chora

This is the largest church of Folegandros, dedicated to the Assumption. It is built on a cliff above the main town, probably at the location of an Ancient Temple. In the courtyard and inside the church you will see ancient inscriptions, sculptures and bases of statues. Also, there is a marble inscription of 1687 which refers to the renovation of the temple. Reconstructions of the church as we know it today started in 1816 and ended in 1821.

The image of Virgin Mary is kept in the church. According to the old inhabitants of Folegandros, at Easter the priest of the church and the villagers hold the image and walk through all the streets of the village so that everyone can see it.

To get to the Church of Panagia, you need to follow the cobblestoned street at Pounta square. It is approximately a 15 minute walk to arrive at the Church.
